These Remote U.S. Towns Are So Isolated, Most People Think They’re Made Up

America is a big place with many open areas where people live very differently than they do in most neighborhoods. Tiny groups of people live deep in canyons or on cold ground and finding them requires a long trip. You have to be patient to get there safely. These ten towns feel like they are from a film but they actually exist.

Supai, Arizona

Supai is a secret village located way down in the Grand Canyon. Since cars cannot go there you have to hike or use a mule. It is the last spot in America where animals deliver the mail. A mule train brings the letters every day.

Whittier, Alaska

Everyone stays together in one fourteen story building. This makes the town very different from others. You reach it by water or a tunnel. The tunnel only goes one way at a time. Most people think this place is just a story.

Monowi, Nebraska

This spot is famous because it officially has a population of just one person who is the mayor and the librarian. She pays taxes to herself and maintains the local tavern for people driving through the rural plains.

Utqiagvik, Alaska

Utqiagvik is the furthest north city in the country and it is super lonely. You cannot drive there because no roads exist. Everything and everyone must fly in on a plane. In winter the sun stays down for sixty five days which is a long time.

Angle Inlet, Minnesota

This little town is physically separated from the rest of the lower forty eight states by a big lake and Canadian land. To visit by car you actually have to drive through Canada and cross the border twice just to get home.

Marfa, Texas

This small town is found deep in the Texas desert. It is a famous place for art lovers. Visitors spend hours driving across the empty land. They come to see the art and the glowing lights. Marfa is a very far and interesting place to be.

Point Roberts, Washington

This is another strange geographic spot where the town is on a peninsula that can only be reached by driving through British Columbia. It is a very quiet place because the border crossing keeps the usual tourist traffic away.

Green Bank, West Virginia

In this West Virginia town there are no signals for phones or the internet at all. A massive space tool nearby requires this silence to work right. Local people enjoy a peaceful world where modern tech is not allowed to bother anyone.

Centralia, Pennsylvania

A big fire is burning deep under the streets of this small place. It started a long time ago in the sixty decade and it is still hot. Almost everyone moved away to stay safe. Smoke still comes out of the big cracks in the empty roads.

Stehekin, Washington

You can only get to this peaceful mountain community by taking a long boat ride or a very difficult hike through the Cascades. There are no roads connecting it to the outside world which makes it a perfect place for anyone who truly wants to disappear for a while.
